It is well with my soul

Yesterday in a worship time we sang the old hymn Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing, and it reminded me once again of how much I love many of the old hymns. I love the depth of the lyrics, the deep understanding of who God is and who we are in him, the search for more of him no matter the costs, and the understanding that it’s never about me, it’s always about God!

I thought of the amazing hymn It Is Well With My Soul, and I found this wonderful youtube-video with the song and the story of Horatio Spafford who went through incredible trials as described in the video, but chose to continue to bless and love his Father in heaven. It reminds of the faith of an Old Testament hero such as Habakkuk who declared: “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior” (Habakkuk 3:17-18). Watch the video to It is Well With My Soul and read the powerful lyrics.

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way. When sorrows like sea billows roll: whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul

Chorus: It is well (it is well) with my soul (with my soul). It is well, it is well with my soul

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come. Let his blest assurance control that Christ hath regarded my helpless estate and hath shed his own blood for my soul.
(Chorus)

My sin, oh the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole is nailed to His cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul!
(Chorus)

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live: If Jordan above me shall roll. No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life thou bit whisper thy peace to my soul
(Chorus)

And Lord haste the day, when my faith shall be sight. The clouds be rolled back as a scroll: The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, even so, it is well with my soul
It is well (it is well) with my soul (with my soul), it is well, it is well with my soul

Torben – who can’t help but thinking about the small things that bug me and make me annoyed at God and can’t help but thanking God for his patience with me!
